Farming enterprises are estates specializing in commercial crops, generally essentially planting a single crop, with perhaps additional plots for vegetables for eating and so on. These farms, focused around a plantation house, produce vegetation including cotton plants, cannabis, caffeinated beans, leaf beverage, cocoa beans, sugar cane, poppy, sisal, vegetable seeds, palms for oil, edible fruits, rubber trees and timber trees. Trade protectionism and inherent benefits have occasionally impacted to deciding the location of plantations are located.

In current terminology, the term usually refers only to extensive estates. Before about 1860, it was the usual term for a farming operation of any size in the southern areas of British North America, with, as Noah Webster noted, “farm” becoming the usual term from about Maryland northward. The enslavement of people was the common practice in Maryland and states southward. The plantations there were coerced labor farms. The term “plantation” was used in nearly all British colonies but very rarely in the United Kingdom itself in this context. There it was used largely for timber plantations, areas deliberately grown with trees, whether solely for forestry purposes, or partially for aesthetic appeal in gardens and parks, when it might also cover plantings of garden shrubs.

Among the first cases of plantations were the vast agricultural lands of the Roman Empire, which produced large quantities of grain, wine, and olive extract for export. Plantation agriculture proliferated with the increase in international trade and the formation of an international economy that followed the spread of European colonies.
